JOHN M. BENNETT Reviews

Sucursal de estrella: poemarios iniciales y finales by Alvaro Cardona Hine
(University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque, NM / Editorial Catriel, Spain, 2006)

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Reflecting how this text is in Spanish, we present a Spanish review. An English translation of the review follows below.]

diminutos
por las nubes
debajo de la amapola
dentro de las manzanas de ayer

entran
por la mañana
y salen por los ojos
del perro muerto

JOHN M. BENNETT Reviews

Sucursal de estrella: poemarios iniciales y finales by Alvaro Cardona Hine

Alvaro Cardona Hine is well-known in the United States as a poet, writer, translator, artist, and musician. In the realm of poetry, his haiku and other short poems have been widely admired. Born in Costa Rica, he has lived most of his life in the US, and is best known as a writer in English.

His earliest work was in Spanish, however, and apparently he has continued to write in that language as well, as this fine collection of his early and late Spanish poetry demonstrates. These poems have echoes of the Hispanic poets he knew so well (among his translations is an edition of César Vallejo’s España aparta de mí este cáliz), among them Lorca, Machado, Jorge Guillén, Jiménez, and Neruda. He also uses some traditional Spanish forms, such as the romance. Cardona Hine’s poetry in Spanish, however, is very much its own poetic world, and displays personal references and an intimacy that is unique. I would also venture to say that his work in Spanish is distinct in style, in linguistic reach or extension, and in voice, from his poetry in English. This is an indication of how strongly both a language and a culture affect a literature; in fact, literature is profoundly immersed in culture, as is language itself, and cannot truly be separated from it. Cardona Hine is a poet who resided in at least two different cultures, and his Sucursal de estrella provides a very welcome view into one of them. As an example, here’s a complete poem from the book:
Las Hormigas

andan por todo lado
con delantales
diminutos
por las nubes
debajo de la amapola
dentro de las manzanas de ayer

entran
por la mañana
y salen por los ojos
